Funding…

Each Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is an individual charity in its own right and must raise its own funding. Getting adequate funding is a perennial problem for most charitable organizations, and bureaux are no exception.

For every pound a CAB gets, it can return up to eleven to local economies, often by helping people claim entitlements they didn't know they were eligible for.

Volunteers are the mainstay of our organisation. They contribute over 10,000 hours each year to our bureau, and if paid at the minimum wage, would cost the Service over £68,000 per annum.

Funding for the generalist service is provided by Durham County Council and supported by additional funding from town and parish councils both in monetary terms and in non-cash help such as premises. However, the funding received would only provide the most basic of services and so we must look to other sources to resource the shortfall or to fund any development.

Additional funding comes from a number of sources:

  • Legal Services Commission
  • The Northern Rock Foundation
  • Face to Face Debt Advice (funded by the government)
  • Sure Start
  • NHS
  • Capacitybuilders
  • Future Builders
  • The Big Lottery

Bureaux operate in an uncertain environment; a great deal of staff time is spent seeking funds to supplement the core funding and to get additional resources to enable us to respond to the needs and demands of the local communities we serve.

How you can help your local bureau?

Here are some of the ways in which individuals and companies can support their local CAB and help it maintain and extend its services:

  • Become a CAB volunteer
  • Help with a CAB project such as a fundraising event, or production of a new advice leaflet
  • Make a donation of money, time, computer equipment or services
